You can reduce the spread of COVID-19 by taking some simple precautions:

  • Wash your hands at regular intervals with an alcohol-based sanitizer or with soap and water
  • Maintain a distance of 3 feet between you and anyone who is coughing and sneezing
  • Avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes. Since your hand touches many surfaces, you can get easily contaminated as
    the virus can enter your body and make you sick
  • You and your family should follow respiratory hygiene, that is, covering your mouth and nose with a bent elbow or tissue
    when you cough or sneeze. Dispose the used tissue immediately and wash your hands with soap and water
  • Stay at home if you have fever, cough or difficulty breathing, and isolate yourself. Seek medical attention

What is proning? How is it helpful?

Proning is a medically accepted position of lying on one’s stomach as it improves breathing comfort and oxygenation. It is the process of turning a patient carefully from their back onto their abdomen (stomach). This method has proved beneficial in COVID-19 patients who face difficulty in breathing.

Proning keeps alveolar units, situated at the end of bronchial tubes in the lungs, open to make breathing easy. This is required when the SpO2 decreases below 94. While proning, position one pillow below your neck and chest.

What cautions should be followed while proning?

  • Avoid proning for an hour after meals
  • Maintain proning for only as much time as easily tolerable
  • You can prone up to 16 hours a day, in multiple cycles, as felt comfortable
  • Adjust pillows to alter pressure areas and for comfort
  • Avoid proning during pregnancy, major cardiac conditions, unstable spine, femur or pelvic fractures
