Settlement option refers to staying invested even after your plan matures. Instead of receiving the entire maturity amount in one go this helps you in distributing the market risk across a period of upto 5 years.
You can choose to opt for settlement option atleast 1 day prior to the date of your plan's maturity, otherwise the lumpsum amount will be credited automatically on the maturity date.
