Jim Corbett National Park, originally christened Hailey National Park, was founded on 8 August 1936. Named after Sir Malcolm Hailey, the then Governor of the United Provinces of British India, the park sprawled across 324 square kilometres at its inception. However, its roots trace back even further, with talks of a wildlife reserve surfacing as early as 1907. It wasn’t until 1936, with the assistance of Jim Corbett himself, that the dream of a protected wilderness became a reality.

Renaming and Recognition

Over the years, the park underwent several name changes, reflecting its evolving significance. From Hailey National Park, it transitioned to Ramganga National Park in 1954-1955, before reverting to its current title, Corbett National Park, in 1955-1956. This renaming honoured Jim Corbett, a legendary conservationist and naturalist renowned for his efforts in protecting India’s wildlife, particularly tigers.

Inauguration of Project Tiger

Jim Corbett National Park holds a pivotal place in conservation history, marking the starting point of Project Tiger in 1973. This ambitious initiative aimed to safeguard the majestic Bengal tiger and its habitat. Jim Corbett’s legacy as a protector of wildlife made it a fitting venue for the inauguration of this crucial project. Since then, the park has been at the forefront of tiger conservation efforts in India.

Biodiversity and Conservation

Spanning an impressive 1,318.54 square kilometres, Jim Corbett National Park is a haven for diverse flora and fauna. Its landscape, characterised by ridges, streams, plateaus, and forests, provides a thriving habitat for numerous species.
