A Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN) is a unique 12-digit identifier assigned to subscribers of the National Pension System (NPS) in India. It acts as a lifelong account number for managing contributions and tracking retirement savings. PRAN ensures portability, allowing individuals to access and manage their NPS account seamlessly across India, regardless of changes in employment or location.
In terms of efficiency and accountability, PRAN is essential to the National Pension System. It, was introduced by the Government of India to provide citizens with a sustainable pension plan for their retirement years. Every NPS subscriber must have a PRAN, as it helps in linking and managing all their retirement contributions efficiently.
PRAN plays a crucial role in retirement planning, enabling individuals to contribute to a structured pension plan like NPS. By maintaining a centralised record of contributions and accumulated savings, PRAN ensures transparency and ease of access for the subscriber. Furthermore, tools like the retirement planning calculator allow subscribers to forecast their retirement corpus, which directly ties into their PRAN account.
Here are some of the key features of PRAN to consider.
PRAN remains valid across the country throughout the subscriber’s life.
PRAN provides access to real-time account details, including contribution history and returns.
The number stays the same even when switching jobs or relocating.
PRAN ensures secure and transparent management of funds within NPS.
A PRAN Card is a physical document issued to NPS subscribers, containing their unique PRAN number and other relevant details. It serves as proof of registration in the NPS and provides key account information.
Many might think that PRAN (the number) is the same as PRAN (the card). Both have some differences, summarised as follows:
Aspect | PRAN (Number) | PRAN Card |
Nature | A unique 12-digit identifier. | A physical document. |
Functionality | Used for tracking and managing NPS. | Proof of account ownership. |
Accessibility | Available digitally. | Delivered physically. |
PRAN ensures a streamlined process for managing pension plans under the NPS. It acts as a gateway for accessing retirement savings and monitoring the performance of contributions.
There are multiple ways to apply for PRAN.
Step 1. Visit the nearest Point of Presence (POP)
Step 2. Fill out the NPS application for PRAN number form or you can opt for the Annexure S1 form available with the executive of PoP.
Step 3. Submit the required documents (PAN card or Aadhaar card) for KYC verification.
Submit the form, along with the documents, and make the payment.
You can apply for a PRAN card online through two routes: using your PAN or Aadhaar.
Step 1. For PAN, visit the NSDL (National Securities Depository Limited) website, open the NPS page, register, choose your bank for KYC, fill up the form, upload your photo and signature, and make the payment.
Step 2. For Aadhaar, go to the same NPS page, select ;Register with Aadhaar Offline e-KYC’, and verify using the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. Next, review the auto-fetched details, fill the remaining fields, upload your signature and optional photo. To complete the process, make the payment.
Note that there is no separate ‘PRAN website’. As the PRAN number is linked to your NPS account, all online processes related to your PRAN can be carried out on NSDL.
NRIs can participate in NPS by acquiring a PRAN and contributing to retirement plans. Documents such as your passport and overseas address proof are essential for their application.
They can apply online or via PoPs.
You can follow these steps to activate your PRAN card:
Step 1. Go to the eNPS portal.
Step 2. Enter your PRAN number and the other details requested on the screen.
Step 3. You will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number or email. Enter it to access your account and receive your login credentials.
Step 4. Log in to view your NPS transactions, update bank details, or check card status.
Step 5. Open the Activation tab, enter the OTP again, and provide any remaining information.
Step 6. Click ‘Activate’ to complete the process and download your ePRAN.
Apply using the PRAN number and password to access account details.
Follow the password recovery process on the portal.
Track the application or card delivery status online.
Access real-time balance and contributions via the portal and use nps calculator if you want to estimate future growth.
Once you have applied for PRAN, you can check the application status the following way:
Step 1. Visit the NSDL website and open the NPS portal.
Step 2. On the homepage, select PRAN Application Status (Through Ack. No).
Step 3. You will be taken to a new page. Choose the Subscriber Registration Request Status option.
Step 4. Enter your acknowledgement number along with the captcha code.
Step 5. Click ‘Search’ to view the current status of your PRAN number application.
Knowing the difference between Tier I and Tier II accounts can help you understand the features and benefits that you may be able to avail of.
Log in to the PRAN portal. Download the e-PRAN for printing. You can either print this directly or download it to print it later at your convenience.
Check your NPS account or contact the CRA (Central Record-keeping Agency).
